Paint Sets
This Yarka watercolor set is the one I use most often. The colors are beautiful and intense, and they seem to last forever! Kuretake is my favorite paint set to recommend to people. It’s not too expensive and the colors are super saturated and go on so smooth. For a super affordable option, Meilang watercolors go on vibrant and the selection of colors is great for the price. They also come in a cute retro blue tin.
Paper
Arches is the gold standard for watercolor paper. It is made of 100% cotton and allows the paint to blend beautifully. If you’re looking for something in the mid price range, I recommend Fabriano paper. It’s 25% cotton, so it’s a good compromise when you’re looking for affordability and quality. If you’e looking for an inexpensive paper, I would recommend Canson XL watercolor papers.
Brushes
My favorite brushes are Kolinsky Sable, however they can be very expensive. If you’re looking for a brush with a sharp tip that holds it’s shape, I would recommend ZenArt tulip brushes. If you’re looking for a good starter pack, you cant beat this wood handled set on Amazon for 12.99!
Palette
Ceramic and porcelain are the best material for watercolor palettes. If you’ve ever bought a plastic palette and notice that the paint and water keeps beading up on you, I would suggest trying a ceramic palette. The paint goes on smoothly and it’s so much easier to mix on.
Odds & Ends
Most of these supplies you have laying around the house. Mason jars work great for holding your clean (or dirty) paint water. Paper towels are perfect for dabbing your brush on. Lastly, a pencil and eraser for sketching (I’m not fancy - I use a mechanical pencil because it makes thin and precise lines.)
